Free choice program for all divisions. Most of the competition rounds are open to the public.
Guitar Idol SC – Open to all non-classical guitar players ages 10-18. Contestants are allowed to use sheet music.
Ensemble Division – For classical guitar and other instruments. Performers are allowed to use sheet music.
Division I – All performance selections must be memorized and performed on a classical guitar.
Divisions II- All performance selections must be memorized and performed on a classical guitar.
Division III – Contestants are allowed to use sheet music. All selections must be performed on a classical guitar.
It is expected that every competitor’s choice of music fits within the time allowed for each round. If a competitor exceeds the time allotted, that competitor will be asked to stop but at no penalty to his or her evaluation. All judges’ decisions are final.
Guitar Idol SC
This category is open to all non-classical guitar players ages 10-18. Contestants are allowed to use sheet music. Participants are expected to perform up to 3 minutes of music. All guitar styles are welcome. There will be only one round. Three prize winners will be announced on Sunday, June 12 at the award ceremony.
Prizes for Guitar Idol SC
1st place – $150 + $100 gift certificate from Sims Music Store
2nd place – $100
3rd place – $75
This category is open to players ages 18 and up. Classical guitar duos, trios, quartets or any classical guitar and solo instrument (including voice) combination are welcome.
Each group in the Ensemble Division will have up to 10 minutes to play. This year, we will only have one round for Ensemble Division.
The 1st prize winners for the Ensemble Division will be selected upon the completion of the round.
The 1st prize winners in the Ensemble Division will be invited back in June 2017 to play a 40 minute recital for an honorarium of $500.
Prizes for Ensemble Division
1st place – $1200 + $500 honorarium for concert in 2017
2nd place – $700.
Division I: College/Professional (no age limit)
Each competitor in Division I will have 7 minutes to play in the qualifying round.
Seven players will be selected to compete in the final round. Each finalist will perform 10 minutes of music.
The winners for Division I will be selected upon the completion of the final round.
Prizes for Division I
1st place – $1000 + one handmade guitar by George Thomas. The guitar is a replica of the 1840 Panormo. The top is European spruce; the back and sides are Indian rosewood.
2nd place – $500.
3rd place – $300.
Division II: Grades 9-12 (as of April 2016)
Each competitor in Division II will have 5 minutes to play. One round only.

Division III: Grades 8 and under (as of April 2016)
Each competitor in Division III will have 3 minutes to play. One round only.

1st place – $250
2nd place – $150

All judges’ decisions are final.
All prizes subject to mandatory 30% federal tax withholding for foreign prize-winners; US prize-winners will be issued an IRS-1099.
